Divisions

An appeal is a review of the trial court's decision by another court. Generally, the appeal must be based on an argument that a legal error was made by the trial court. An appeal is not a retrial. You will not be permitted to introduce new evidence, and the appellate court will not reassess conflicting evidence. You may not appeal on behalf of a friend, a spouse, a child, or other relative (unless you are a legally appointed guardian). The party who files the appeal is called the appellant.

The Civil Division processes legal disputes brought by parties to recover money, real or personal property, enforce a contract, collect damages for injuries, or protect a party's civil rights.

Collections provides direct assistance in order to facilitate payment of delinquent fines and fees for Shasta, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Sierra, Tehama, and Yuba Courts. Fines and fees may be related to Traffic, Criminal, Family Law or Jury matters.

A criminal action is the proceeding by which a person charged with a public offense is accused and brought to justice and punishment. A criminal action is prosecuted in the name of the People of the State of California, as a party, against the person charged with the offense.

Family Law cases involve parties who are ending a marriage or domestic partnership, legal separation or nullity of marriage; establishment of parental relationship, petitions for custody and support, request for orders regarding, child custody, support, or visitation, support enforcement, or who seek protection from domestic violence, civil harassment, workplace violence or elder abuse.

The Finance Division is in charge of all financial dealings at the court and does not have access to any individual case files.

The Juvenile Division is comprised of two units: dependency and delinquency. Both Units respond to issues involving children.

It is our mission to provide a safe environment for all court proceedings; to protect the dignity of court proceedings; to provide a safe and secure building for all who enter; and to enforce court orders, including warrants of arrest; to provide safe, secure and timely transportation for incarcerated defendants to and from the courts.

Processes matters that can include wills, conservatorships, guardianships, mental health or LPS petitions, compromise of minor claims, petitions for change of name and special trusts.

Small claims cases are lawsuits that do not exceed $10,000 and are resolved quickly and inexpensively with relatively simple and informal rules.

The Traffic Division processes infraction violations, including those for Juveniles. An infraction is a violation of, or failure to comply with, certain provisions of the California Vehicle Code, local ordinance or other law or statute.

An unlawful detainer matter is a case in which a landlord seeks to evict a tenant.
